I gave three "wine bottle holder thingies" for Christmas presents, but didn't give anyone any instructions. I just put the block of wood in a bag with a bottle of wine. I didn't get to be with John when he discovered the "secret", but he sent me a picture. It really was a cool gift. It is just amazing what you can find at craft shows.

In fairness, Eric pointed out that the wine neck went through the hole. I then googled images of "wine tilting" until I found a picture on a gift shop website that sold these. What one lacks in ingenuity, one can almost always make up in sound research.
